Tax relief saves you money. If you pay 40% tax, your 5% contribution (€2,500/year) only costs you €1,500/year after tax relief.
How this calculator works
- Growth rate: We use 5% as a default, which is a reasonable long-term average for a diversified pension fund. Past performance doesn't guarantee future returns.
- Inflation: We reduce the growth rate by 2% to show values in today's money (real returns).
- Charges: We deduct the annual management charge (AMC) from growth. A 1% AMC on a 5% return means you keep 4%.
- Tax relief: Your actual contribution cost is lower because the government gives you tax relief. A €100 contribution only costs you €60 if you pay 40% tax.
